Social gatherings of former Trans-Canada Air Lines stewardesses during the sixties and seventies spawned the idea of forming an association of former flight attendants. During 1978 many of those former “stews” were contacted, and, when much interest was shown, committees were formed. After almost two years of hard work, plans were in place for a reunion. Approximately 1000 invitations were mailed and over 700 replies were received from former TCA stewardesses eager to come to Toronto for a “Week-end Layover” reunion. Thanks to Gretchen Aird, who had the courage to go forward her dream, along with her dedicated committees, this gathering was a huge success and resulted in the birth of Canadian Maple Wings Association (CMWA) in May 1980. It was officially incorporated November 24, 1980.

'Stewardesses' is the longest English word that is typed with only the left hand.

Membership The 800 plus active members of CMWA now include both retired and active flight attendants from TCA and Air Canada. We are fortunate to include in our membership stewardesses from the beginning years of Trans Canada Airlines, 1938 and 1939. Our members reside not only in Canada but also in the United States and England.

After an application is submitted and national dues are paid to CMWA, one may then elect to a join a Chapter or remain a Member-at-Large. Each Chapter sets its own dues and has its own unique identity. Chapters are required to meet at least three times a year and the Annual General Meeting may be counted as one of those meetings.

Annual Events and Meetings The Association’s Annual General Meeting is held in the Spring. The term of office for the National Executive is two years. The Association issues three newsletters a year and publishes a membership directory approximately every three year. On the first Sunday of December, or thereabouts, many of the thirteen Chapters host a Christmas lunch in their area with the theme “Holding Hands Across Canada”. In the spirit of fellowship, the Chapters should endeavour to extend an invitation to local Members-at-Large. Since the Southern Ontario area has six chapters, on a rotating basis, one Chapter organises and hosts the Christmas lunch for the area. All members in Ontario are welcome, as well as any members visiting the area.
Funds Donated Funds donated to charitable organizations throughout Canada by Members-at-Large, Chapters and the National organization now exceeds $500,000.
